1981-82 OPC Bob Bonanza

I want to send a big warm hug to reader Bob P. who in response to my plea for help with the 'missing' '81/82 OPC set, came through BIG time.

He sent me an email out of the blue in early December asking for my address. This from a person I'd never spoken to before, and, to my knowledge, had never even left a comment on my blog before.

I love this hobby and the outstanding people in it.

Let's get to the cards Bob sent over.

A Goals Against Average leader card featuring Vezina winner Richard Sevigny.

I love leader cards, but this one leaves a lot to be desired. Pretty craptastic design. I may have to try and come up with a better design for this one. I'll add it to my list of things to do. Look for it here in 2017.

Richard Sevigny was the man responsible for replacing Ken Dryden. No pressure.

 

 

One of my all time faves, Pierre Larouche.

Pierre was coming off of a disappointing 25 goal season, having potted 50 the year before.

 

Big Bird Larry Robinson.

Larry was 8th on the team that year in scoring with 50 points, 2nd in +/- with +46

 

Ahh.... Guy. How we miss thee. Watching Subban go end to end is great, but it's just not the same.

 

If you're saying to yourself that this is a lot of Montreal cards... well, I'm a Montreal fan. If you want to see Leafs, go elsewhere.

 

Oh all right. But no Leafs.

 

How about Gilbert Perrault?

Gil is coming off his worst season ever with only 59 points in 56 games. Damn those injuries.

 

Now Dave Taylor here is coming off of his best season ever.

47 goals 65 assists and the Republican side of the Triple Crown line. (I have no idea of Mr Taylor's political beliefs. He played right wing. Don't email me. I mean it.)

 

And for the sake of brevity (too late) I'll just package up the rest in one scan.

 

By the way... Mark Napier there? 35 goals, 2nd on the Canadiens in scoring. Mike Rogers, 88 goals in two seasons. Two very under rated players.

 

There you have it.... if any of you are as awesome as Bob and can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

one man's junk.....

I remember a few days ago, Fuji asked everyone who reads his blog, why do you collect cards? I answered a few reasons, but one that I forgot was.... one man's junk is another man's treasure. I'm of course talking about trading. Getting rid of crap you don't want in exchange for some treasures you can't for the life of you figure out why anyone would part with.

Trade night at one of the local card shops was this past Thursday. It was a really good time. Fifteen to twenty people sitting around tables, passing around trade boxes while chatting and watching tape delayed coverage of the Olympics.

I managed to come home with a few beauties for myself. Only one new Carey Price though.

People are really reluctant to rid themselves of his cards.

 I added another die cut Masked Men card towards my set. Ryan Miller joins the party and gets me within 5 of the 50 card set.

 This framed Ice Kings card is similar to what Gypsy Queen does, and by Tuesday should be in the hands of the man featured on the card itself. Hopefully he will sign it and send it back to me. Fingers crossed.

 Another Jimmy Howard. I've quietly put together an extensive Jimmy Howard collection. Why  I have no idea.... but it's cool to have a collection of someone who doesn't play for Montreal.

 Speaking of Montreal, I added another auto from the Parkhurst Champions set. I think that makes around 20 or so..... and I haven't spent a dime. Love it.

 Two more cards for my goalie autograph collection. The first from the frog subset in Between the Pipes.

 And a goalie better known for his coaching abilities than his playing days.

The last two are youngin's who haven't really found their place yet.

Fourth generation player Blake Geoffrion.

 Blake's card is odd in that the windows for the jersey pieces are recessed deep into the card. There is an 1/8th of an inch gap between the surface of the card and the swatch. Very odd.

Speaking of odd........ A "Rookie Rivalry" card featuring Louis Leblanc vs. Ben Scrivens.

Not quite sure what a rivalry they have. They've played against each other......... once. The very last game of the season. Montreal won. Louis played 13 minutes and had 3 shots.
Not exactly the Hatfields vs the McCoys.
But it's a good looking card, so I'll look the other way.

For those of you who have read this far.... can you believe that the new 2012-13 OPC set is coming out in 2 weeks?

Cardboard Ketchup - Ice Cold Edition

Continuing the story from Waxaholic, I'll put up highlights from two trade/gift packages... The first is from The Angels In Order. Yeah, I know. Hockey cards from a baseball guy in Texas who roots for the Angels. Go figure. But I'll take 'em. Tom said he could help with my quest to complete the '92/93 UD set, and sent over 22 cards off of my list.

I was wondering what Rob was smiling about,  and then I saw the half naked chick in the background.

for my Vancouver Canuck friends... Kirk McLean. This was the period when goalies still wore leather or 'leather look' pads, but had them colour co-ordinated to their team colours.

a Teemu Selanne Young Gun.... although I thought his rc was earlier..... Hmm.....

The next lot is from Casey of Drop the Gloves fame. We all know Casey is a Bruins fan, but we like him anyways. Although when the first card I saw out of the envelope was a Rene Bourque card, and then another.... I thought I had been Bipped.
But then Chipper appeared, and then the package really took off quality wise....
I saw that some of you recived cards from Casey at the same time and posted cards from the '70/71 Topps set. Casey must've found a shoebox in an attic somewhere, 'cause he sent me some too.

That is one hell of a lineup. If I could trade Backstrom for the Montreal Goalie in this set, Rogie Vachon.... it would be unbeatable.

Ah heck, put Backstrom in net and this lineup would probably still win the Cup.

Good Doggie...

Mr dogfacedgremlin from The Real DFG was kind enough to send over a trade package awhile ago. We've been sending stuff back and forth for awhile now, but this one was a wee different. Apparently dfg cleaned out his garage or something. Inside the box he sent, were three other boxes. Two, four hundred count boxes which I haven't touched yet, and another box modified to hold top loaders. For this post, I'll touch on a few of the cards in that box... we'll get to the other two boxes later.
